As our Combi van coughed its way up to Kintamani on the northern side of the island, the sky suddenly gave way to torrential rain that quickly inundated the narrow mountain road. It is well positioned on top of a rocky promontory in southwestern Bali. At high tide, it is practically floating in ocean waters. Tanah Lot means earth and sea, quite apropos given its location. Batur in the distance as its backdrop. It is often cloaked in mist lending it an ethereal appearance. Within the temple grounds are fine examples of meru, a multi-tiered black thatched pagoda. Merus have an odd number of roofs up to a maximum of eleven. The royal temple of Taman Ayun in Mengwi has an impressive line up of merus in its inner courtyard. Together they constitute the "skyscrapers" of the village.

Everyday we discovered offerings to the gods in palm leaf trays in the most unexpected places. Some contained flowers and betel, others fruit and rice flour cookies, and during the festival, we saw more elaborate offerings, all of them attractively arranged. The contents notwithstanding, the Balinese are always trying to please their gods and ancestors. This must be the reason why Bali and its people are blessed with beauty and serenity.

Dance, music, and the theater of wayang are other forms of expression laden with religious connotations. Much like the training of gamelan orchestra players, dance training begins when one is still very young. The teacher will stand in front of the children and start dancing. Practicing with a gamelan orchestra will only happen when the dance is considered to have entered the student. The gods and the goddesses will enter their bodies as they enter trance, and they will dance with movements that they have not mastered in their normal state. They may act and sound like a horse or a monkey; at times, they end up dancing while balancing their back on a piece of bamboo supported by two men on both ends. When they collapse, the village women will chant to ask the gods and the goddesses to peacefully leave the bodies of the young girls. If they refuse, dancing will continue until they agree, at which point the girls will simply collapse.

Barong

Barong is probably the most well known dance. It is also another story-telling dance, narrating the fight between good and evil. This dance is the classic example of Balinese way of acting out mythology, resulting in myth and history being blended into one reality. Wanna know the story?

2. Bebali Dances

These dances are ceremonial, and usually performed in the middle court of a temple. In the spectrum of sacred and secular, these dances fall in the middle.

Gambuh

Gambuh is a danced drama. It tells the courtly story of a Javanese prince in his quest for a beautiful princess.

3. Balih-balihan Dances

These dances are often considered secular and entertaining. They are performed in the outer court or even outside the temple.

Janger

The only music to accompany them are the beats of their palms hitting their chests, their thighs, or other parts of their bodies, or their claps, rhythmically accompanied by shouting and chanting.

The dancers move in unison, creating a spectacular choreographic performance. Either hands stretched out, pulled in, rested on the shoulder of the next person, or waists gyrated left and right, etc.

Hello reef riders and welcome back to the original Bali surf ‘n weather report (since ’99). Well so far so good, we got a nice looking day coming on for us here in Bali with lots of blue sky and sunshine in stall. The wind is blowing hard off ashore (Legian to Uluwatu) coming outta the ESE-SE @ 8-12knot+ and will probably increase in strength as the day gets going. The time right now has just gone 7.45am and I’ve just got back from doing the morning surf re con of the Outer Reefs here in Tuban. Wave height has dropped off a foot or so from yesterday but there’s still plenty breaking in the 2-4ft range between Kuta Reef and Airport Left. The tide had just passed through the top of a 2.0mtr High @ 6.30am and is now on the run out for a 0.8mtr Low set to happen around 12.30-1.00pm. Kuta Reef already had around 10 surfers in the line up with wave height in the waist to shoulder high plus range. It was kinda a little bit inconsistent but when they did come through they were peeling off for at least 70 yards. Middle Reef was getting some better size with the set waves reaching a few feet over head. There was a handful of riders out there and Middle’s will get better as the tide starts to run out a bit more. Airport Left was in the waist to shoulder high range and there were already a few reef taxi’s parked in the channel indicating that the crew from Japan were in office. One of my friends who is staying down at Balangan has just sms’d through that there’s still waves in the head to over head high class down there this morning. Johnny says that it’s still a little inconsistent with the morning high tide but should get better around mid morning with a little less water over the reef. There were 3 surfers in the water at the time that just couldn’t wait. Uluwatu would still be pushing the over head to double head high range. The Main Peak would be where the action is down there this morning and then the Racetrack will be the place to be from lunchtime onwards. Ok so there’s gunna be plenty of waves surfed around Bali today and that should keep everyone here on vacation stoked. I managed to get those body boarding photos from Padang Padang yesterdays loaded onto their appropriate page last night. Plus Dan from the SUPER BANK and Ray from the Kandui Surf Resort up in the MENTAWAI ISLANDS have both filed their reports onto their pages. Not to mention our roaming surf reporter Pierre, he’s always got something for ya’s on the READERS REPORT page. Me I’ve got another VIDEO CLIP or two to throw together for ya’s (then go for a surf) so there’s plenty for ya’s to check out on the baliwaves.com today.
